Search Tips

Get the most out of NC Formulary Search.

Two Ways to Search

The search box works in two different ways depending on how you use it:

  • Select from the dropdown — As you type, an autocomplete list appears with matching drugs. Clicking a drug from this list takes you directly to that drug's detail page with full coverage information.
  • Type and press Enter — Pressing Enter (or clicking the Search button) runs a broad search. This returns not just exact matches but also related drugs — brand/generic counterparts, aliases, and drugs in the same class. This is the best way to explore your options.
Search by Drug Class

One of the most powerful features is searching by drug class. Try terms like:

This shows every drug in that class, making it easy to find covered alternatives. Sort by "Plans Covering" to see which drugs have the broadest coverage, or filter by a specific insurer to find what's on their formulary.

Filter by Insurer

After running a search, use the insurer dropdown above the results table to narrow results to a specific plan. When you filter by insurer, only drugs covered by that insurer are shown — a quick way to answer "what does this patient's plan cover?"

Sort Your Results

Click any column header in the results table to sort by that field. Click again to reverse the sort order. Useful columns include:

  • Drug Name — alphabetical order
  • Generic Name — group by active ingredient
  • Plans Covering — see which drugs are most widely covered
Compare Plans

Found a few drugs you're considering? Use the Compare feature to view coverage side-by-side across all insurers. This makes it easy to see which drug has the best tier placement across multiple plans.
